Tightwads and Spenders : Predicting financial conflict in couple relationships

Financial problems are consistently reported as a top stressor for Americans, contributing to marital conflict and dissolution. The purpose of the study used for this presentation was to determine how spending personalities contribute to financial conflict between partners. This presentation is intended for entry level and experienced planners who want to apply a holistic planning approach by providing ideas of how to incorporate relationship dynamics into resource allocation decisions.

  1. Recognize the top predictors of financial conflict for both husbands and wives.
  2. Describe ways in which financial planners can encourage low-stress communication with their clients
  3. Identify communication strategies available to the financial planner in which they can utilize with their clients to help reduce couple conflict around money.

Derek Lawson is a Certified Financial PlannerTM and a Graduate Research Assistant of Personal Financial Planning at Kansas State University. Derek is a Financial Planner at Priority Financial Partners based out of Durango, CO. His research focuses on relationship dynamics, physiological stressors, financial therapy, and behavioral finance, with a primary focus of young adults in their mid-twenties and thirties. His work has been published in the Journal of Financial Planning, and he co-authored a chapter on Money Scripts in the book, Financial Therapy: Theory, Research, and Practice. Derek is currently serving as Treasurer of the Financial Therapy Association, has previously served as the Secretary for the National FPA NexGen group, and Director of NexGen for the Financial Planning Association of Greater Kansas City chapter. He currently serves as the President of the graduate student body at Kansas State University.
