Opening Session:
with Jeremy Held and Linsday Bernum

2018 was a roller coaster year for markets as investors tried to digest what could be the end of an unprecedented run in risk assets over the last decade. Stock market volatility, trade tensions and slowing economic growth globally all weighed heavily on traditional asset classes as 2018 was the worst year for a 60/40 portfolio since 2008.  However, economic data in the US continues to be robust.  GDP grew at the fastest six-month pace in a decade, unemployment hit a 50-year low and consumer confidence soared to its highest levels since the tech bubble, clearly sending mixed messages to market participants.

Jeremy Held, Director of Research at ALPS, and Linsday Bernum, Investor and Global Macro Analyst with Smith Capital Investors, will decipher the mixed messages coming from both the markets and the economy and discuss how it impacts both traditional asset classes such as stocks and bonds as well as real assets and private markets.

Prior to joining Smith Capital Investors, Lindsay was a Global Macro Analyst for the fixed income team at Janus Capital Management LLC. As the leader of the macro team, she was responsible for combining top-down, economic analysis with real-time, individual company data points to produce macroeconomic forecasts across the US and G7 economies. The forecasts were used within the portfolio construction process to help drive decision-making around sector exposure and overall portfolio duration and curve positioning. This unique view of the global economic world, combined with bottom-up fundamental analysis, was an extremely powerful alpha generation tool. Lindsay individually and as part of a team published monthly and quarterly thought-leadership commentary around her unique macro view, as well as special topics including rising rates, inflation, and demographics; disseminated publicly across all major client distribution channels. She led monthly “Market Perspective” internal calls, providing fixed income macro views as well as portfolio positioning for the sales, distribution and marketing teams. Additionally, she was a frequent investment panel participant, presented to the board of directors, and contributed to marketing and asset growth.
